NASHUA, N.H. – Military & Aerospace Electronics and Intelligent Aerospace have recognized Marvin Test Solutions Inc. in Irvine, Calif., as a platinum-level winner in the publications' 2020 Innovators Awards for the company's MTS-3060A SmartCan Gen2 universal O-level aircraft armament test set.

The MTS-3060A SmartCan Universal O-Level Armament Test Set from Marvin Test Solutions Inc. addresses the challenges of performing flightline test activities with an existing generation of armament test sets that limit the ability to verify armament system functionality, failures, and readiness.

The system can perform flightline test and measurement of all fighter aircraft armament and gun systems. The SmartCan weighs 4.2 pounds, and incorporates more than 30 measurement channels, electronic loads, communications interfaces, a switch matrix, and video/audio signal generators, and cable ID.

It is lightweight, cyber secure, battery powered and rugged, and eliminates the need for multiple test sets and cables. Broad measurement capability with more than 30 analog and digital measurement channels enables maintenance testing on armed legacy or 5th generation aircraft. The test set employs smart weapon emulation - enables active versus conventional passive testing.

The 2020 Military & Aerospace Electronics and Intelligent Aerospace Innovators Awards are to recognize products as solutions to difficult aerospace and defense systems design challenges. The awards are in three tiers: platinum, gold, and silver. The awards were announced on 7 Sept. 2020.

The test set for combat aircraft uses the Marvin Test Solutions ATEasy test executive and test development software with a simple-to-learn programming environment, hardware and software simulation, and online user support.

Today’s flightline armament maintainer faces the challenging task of performing O-Level flightline activities with an existing legacy generation of armament test sets that greatly limit the ability to verify armament system functionality, failures, and readiness, Marvin officials say.

Current testers require many personnel to move to the flightline and to operate, and are too slow and cumbersome to validate faults, reducing combat sorties. Warfighters have identified an armament test gap that exists across legacy and 5th generation aircraft equipped with the “Smart” weapon MIL-STD-1760 interface. Legacy handheld O-Level test sets are only capable of performing stray voltage and continuity tests which will not detect digital faults or fully validate the functionality of the interface, requiring the use of additional, multiple large box test sets to more completely test the armament.

The MTS-3060A SmartCan Universal O-Level Armament Test Set was developed to address these needs; the result is an advanced flightline armament test set capable of active testing all fighter aircraft armament and gun systems. The SmartCan incorporates more than 30 measurement channels, electronic loads, communications interfaces such as MIL-STD-1553, MMSI SDB communications, Ethernet, CAN Bus, RS-485), a switch matrix, and video/audio signal generators and cable ID.
