Subsystem integrators of the International Space Station at The Boeing Company in Huntsville, Ala., needed a scalable, real-time system to test serial data buses. They found their answer with the System 500 Model 550-based test and integration systems from L-3 Communications Telemetry & Instrumentation in San Diego.

The test system uses API elements and pulls data in real time, says Jim Scates, lead engineer of the test and data subsystems team for the International Space Station project at Boeing. The Model 550 testers are able to handle the high volume of 1553 buses and data on the space station.

The two test systems from L-3 consist of three commercial-off-the-shelf Model 550 chassis to simultaneously monitor, correlate, and record as many as 44 Mil-Std-1553 buses in real time. This 1553 bus-processing capability is necessary to establish baselines for validation and integration of the International Space Station`s subsystems. - J.M.
