SPS software predicts real-time performance

Navy aircraft systems designers needed software to predict the performance of a real-time project early in development. They chose "Tempus: A Real-Time Measurement Project" by Software Productivity Solutions of Indialantic, Fla., to develop that software measurement.

Navy engineers at the Software Technology and Environment Branch at the Naval Air Warfare Center Aircraft Division at Patuxent River Naval Air Station, Md., wanted to save money by the eliminating the need for integration testing after building the system, says John Walker branch head of the Software and Technology Branch.

Systems often require significant rework after initial software development to meet performance requirements, says Jeff Heimberger, an engineer with SPS.

Tempus examines the source code - and prepares to examine the software design or architecture, given an appropriate model - and makes measurements that correlate with the software`s real-time performance. The measure is an axiomatic, hierarchical measure based on fundamental measurement theory. It can be computed either with or without an operational profile.

SPS engineers completed Project Tempus in response to a government Phase I Small Business Innovation Research initiative. - J.M.
