Microsemi SmartFusion2 SoC and IGLOO2 FPGAs undergo NSA information security screenings
ALISO VIEJO, Calif., 14 Aug. 2014. The SmartFusion2 SoC and IGLOO2 field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) from Microsemi Corp. in Aliso Viejo, Calif., have completed information-security screening for use in secure communications and cyber security applications, company officials announced Wednesday.
The Microsemi SmartFusion2 SoC and IGLOO2 FPGA product families have completed the U.S. National Security Agency (NSA) Information Assurance Directorate (IAD) Secure Implementation Guidelines (SIG) document.
This screening, which lists the FPGAs' design and data security features, includes guidelines for security policies, can help defense system designers address and mitigate security threats in secure communications and cyber security applications, Microsemi officials say.
The U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) has positioned the NSA' secure implementation guidelines as key elements in the department's Trusted Systems and Networks (TSN) strategy, Microsemi officials say. The guidelines help assure systems integrators that Microsemi FPGAs are appropriate for secure communications and cyber security. The military communications market is estimated to reach $30 billion by 2022.
"The IAD SIG instills trust in our defense systems customers by validating our leading information assurance and anti-tamper security capabilities," says Esam Elashmawi, vice president and general manager of the Microsemi SoC Product Group in Mountain View, Calif., where the company's FPGAs are designed.
SmartFusion2 SoC FPGAs integrate flash-based FPGA fabric, a 166 MHz ARM Cortex-M3 processor, advanced security processing accelerators, DSP blocks, SRAM, eNVM and industry-required high performance communication interfaces on one chip. Microsemi's SmartFusion2 SoC FPGAs offer security, reliability, and low power for defense, aviation, communications, industrial, and medical applications.
Microsemi's IGLOO2 FPGAs have a LUT based fabric, 5 gigabits per second transceivers, high speed GPIO, block RAM, a high-performance memory subsystem, DSP blocks, a non-volatile flash based fabric with general-purpose I/Os, 5 gigabits per second SERDES interfaces, and PCI Express end points.
