HAUPPAUGE, N.Y., 12 March 2012. Behlman Electronics Inc. in Hauppauge, N.Y., is introducing the SSCI-890 power supply for the control systems of nuclear power plants. The SSCI-890 for use in radioactive environments has three plug-in Line replaceable units (LRUs) -- two outside that are identical N+1 redundant, and the center LRU that is the system controller.

The outside redundant LRUs are hot-swappable modules that will continue operation even while a power unit is being changed. Most recently, Behlman SSCI-890 units have been ordered for use in a nuclear reactor control systems in South America.

Built on a Behlman commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) design for mission-critical power supplies in U.S. Navy fire-control weapon systems, the SSCI-890 is optimized for radioactive environments such as nuclear reactors.

Each 19-inch 3U rack-mountable unit has two complete power units with a controller unit in the center. The SSCI-890 also has current sharing, and each of the identical power units has short circuit and over current protection, power factor correction, current limiting, load, and line regulation, plus front panel indicators for status of AC and DC.

The LRU Control unit contains a battery, charger, and timing control to support system shutdown during AC brownout conditions. Input is 90 to 240 volts AC, single phase at 47-63 Hz. Logic power output is 5 volts AC at 100 amps, adjustable 10 percent; memory power output is 5 volts AC at 3 amps, adjustable 10 percent. The unit also has outputs at +12 volts AC and -12 volts AC at 1.5 amps.
