Altera begins shipping 40-nanometer FPGA optimized for speed or low power consumption

SAN JOSE, Calif., 14 Dec. 2008. Altera Corp. in San Jose, Calif., has started shipping its 40-nanometer field programmable gate array (FPGA) called the Stratix IV for avionics, military, communications, broadcast, test, and medical applications.

The integrated circuit programmable processor technology is optimzed for speed or low-power applications.

The first device available is the EP4SGX230, offering 230K logic elements (LEs), 36 embedded transceivers operating as fast as 8.5 gigabits per second, 17 megabits of RAM, and 1,288 embedded multipliers.

In 40-nanometer process node, the devices has two variants -- an enhanced (E) version and transceiver-based (GX) version. The Stratix IV family offers as many as 680K logic elements. The devices also support DDR3 memory interface speeds of 1067 megabits per second.

Stratix IV GX FPGAs has as many as 48 transceivers operating as fast as 8.5 gigabits per second for next-generation, high-bandwidth communication infrastructure. Programmable Power Technology enables every programmable logic array block (LAB), digital signal processing (DSP) block, and memory block to deliver high speed or low power, depending on design requirements.

The devices have as many as four hard intellectual property (IP) cores for PCIe Gen1 and Gen2 (x1, x4 and x8), and also support protocols including Serial RapidIO, Gigabit Ethernet, XAUI, CPRI (including 6G CPRI), CEI 6G, GPON, SFI-5.1 and Interlaken.
