SAN DIEGO, 20 May 2009. – A presentation from Airbus at the inaugural Avionics USA conference and exhibition will focus on how next-generation air traffic management technology – NextGENand SESAR – will aircraft retrofits. Pierre Magro, Head of Avionics Product Line – Upgrade Services, Airbus, France, will give the presentation at the conference, which will be held June 1 and 2 at the San Diego Convention Center.
The conference theme is "Driving Innovation and Managing Change," and content will touch on how designers and system integrators are handling the challenges of next-generation systems and standards for commercial and military avionics.
Magro's presentation is from 11:45 am to 12:15 pm on June 1 in the session on Air Traffic Management and is titled "Future Air Traffic Management - SESAR &
NextGen New Aircraft and Retrofit Perspectives."
"Nobody has failed to notice the accelerating drive to attain greater efficiency in the airline industry challenged by increased air traffic, oil price rises and environment concerns. Fragmentation and limitation of the current ATM system represent a major obstacle for more efficient operation and sustainable growth of air traffic," Magro says. "Airbus solutions enable operators to comply with and benefit from future ATM requirements. Our vision is based on more precise and optimized aircraft navigation, more autonomous and safe aircraft, as well as more communicative aircraft. New aircraft will be 'SESAR' ready covering IP1 as well as initial IP2 and some IP3 provisions. For the retrofit, Airbus operators can choose to implement the main airborne ATM solutions, i.e, FANS, P-RNAV up to RNP AR, ATSAW (based on ADS-B In) and ACAS linked to AP/FD. In addition, a cost effective solution for the A320 family is in place in order to allow operators to profit from performance benefits directly linked to the SESAR IP1 requirements but also achieve important benefits in safety, security, environmental aspects, and economy."
The "Future Air Traffic Management" session – begins on June 1 at 10:15 am. Other key speakers in this session include Worth Kirkman, avionics integration leader, MITRE Center for Advanced Aviation Systems Development in Arlington Va., and Mark Ballin, Aircraft Systems and operations sub-project manager, NASA Langley Research Center.
Other session topics include electronic flight bags, runway incursion, layered information assurance for avionics systems, certification and standards for future avionics systems, avionics components standards, cost benefit analysis of implementing performance-based navigation, avionics upgrades, obsolescence, and more.
