LANSDALE, Pa., 12 Jan. 2010. Engineers at Cobham Sensor Systems in Lansdale, Pa., are replacing the traveling wave tube (TWT) components in the U.S. Navy AN/ALQ-99 airborne electronic warfare system with a solid state amplifier module and DC-DC converter.
Cobham experts are doing the work under terms of a potential $11.5 million contract from the Naval Surface Warfare Center in Crane, Ind., as part of the Band 5/6 TWT Replacement Module Assembly (TRMA) project. The ALQ-99 is on the Navy carrier-based EA-18G Growler and EA-6B Prowler electronic warfare aircraft.
"The TRMA program replaces older technology with new for enhanced reliability and ease of maintenance," says Steve Schaefer, president of Cobham Sensor Systems. "The ALQ-99 is a vital part of the suite carried by US Navy EA-6B Prowler and EA-18G Growler aircraft to jam and suppress hostile radars and radar guided weapons."
