ACSS, an L-3 Communications and Thales Company, announced today that it is seeking Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) certification to make its XS-950 Air Transport Data Link (ATDL) Mode S Transponder DO-260B capable (TSO c166b). With this submission, ACSS is the first avionics supplier in the industry to pursue DO-260B readiness within its product line, ACSS officials say. Once Technical Standard Order Authorization is granted by the FAA, the XS-950 it will be able to transmit more information about an aircraft’s position using Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) technology. As the cornerstone technology of the FAA’s NextGen airspace initiative, ADS-B increases capacity and throughput for domestic air transportation, providing more precise position information to the cockpit. Upon certification, the XS-950 will enable new ADS-B capabilities, such as the ACSS SafeRoute suite of ADS-B In applications. SafeRoute’s software products include Surface Area Movement Management (SAMM), In-Trail Procedures (ITP), CDTI Assisted Visual Separation (CAVS), and Merging & Spacing. New capabilities include Surface Indicating & Alerting (SURFIA), which was successfully demonstrated by ACSS and US Airways as part of an FAA program at the end of last year. SURFIA, along with other SafeRoute applications, will improve safety and situational awareness for pilots operating in and around airports. The first operators to be equipped with the new ACSS DO-260B transponders will be US Airways and UPS. The aircraft set for installation include Airbus A300s and A330s, as well as Boeing 747s, 757s, 767s and MD-11s operated by the two carriers. The FAA is expected to propose new rulemaking this summer that will mandate DO-260B transponders over the next few years.
