Bell-Boeing to upgrade CV-22 tiltrotor avionics with dual digital map navigation system

PATUXENT RIVER NAS, Md., 27 Feb. 2011.Military avionics experts at the Bell-Boeing Joint Project Office, Amarillo, Texas, will upgrade the avionics of the CV-22 Special Operations Forces (SOF) variant of the V-22 vertical lift, multimission aircraft under terms of a $13.1 million contract announced Friday.Bell-Boeing will incorporate a dual access feature to the CV-22 tiltrotor's digital map system to enable the pilot as well as the co-pilot to access and control the digital map display independently from the mission computer.In addition to improving the CV-22's dual-digital map system, the company also will upgrade the CV-22's electrical system, troop commander panel, and holdup power circuit. The contract, awarded by the U.S. Naval Air Systems Command at Patuxent River Naval Air Station, Md., includes system improvements, integration, and program management.

The CV-22 provides long-range, high-speed infiltration, exfiltration, and resupply to Special Forces teams in hostile, denied, and politically sensitive areas.

Bell-Boeing will do work on the contract in Philadelphia and Fort Worth, Texas, and should be finished by December 2015.
