Pratt & Whitney PurePower PW1100G-JM engines to power Norwegian Air Shuttle A320neo aircraft

EAST HARTFORD, Conn., 25 July 2012. Pratt & Whitney, a United Technologies Corp. (NYSE:UTX) company, and Norwegian Air Shuttle officials signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to power 50 Airbus A320neo family aircraft with PurePower PW1100G-JM engines. The first delivery is scheduled for 2016.

EAST HARTFORD, Conn., 25 July 2012. Pratt & Whitney, a United Technologies Corp. (NYSE:UTX) company, and Norwegian Air Shuttle officials signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to power 50 Airbus A320neo family aircraft with PurePower PW1100G-JM engines. The first delivery is scheduled for 2016.

The PurePower engine’s advanced gear system enables the fan to operate at a different speed than the low-pressure compressor and turbine. The combination of the gear system and an all-new advanced core delivers fuel efficiency and environmental benefits, says a spokesperson. The first PurePower PW1100G-JM engine is scheduled to begin testing by the end of this year.

"We chose the PurePower engine because we believe it offers the greatest long-term benefits in terms of reduced fuel burn and lower maintenance costs," says Asgeir Nyseth, COO, Norwegian Air Shuttle. "We are confident in the geared technology, and it will offer significant savings in overall operating costs for the A320neo aircraft."

Norwegian Air Shuttle ASA, a public low-cost airline, is the second largest airline in Scandinavia, the third largest low-cost airline in Europe, and has a route portfolio stretching across Europe into North Africa and the Middle East.
