Banyan receives FAA certification to turn Gulfstream business jets into Wi-Fi hotspots with SATCOM avionics
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla., 27 July 2012.Fixed-base operator (FBO) Banyan Air Service in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., may begin installing the Honeywell Aspire 200LG satellite communications (SATCOM) system on Gulfstream GII, Gulfstream GIII and Gulfstream GIV business jets after receiving supplemental type certification (STC) to do so from the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in Washington.
Banyan, located Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport (FXE), offers avionics installations, repairs, and modifications for major avionics manufacturers, as well as offering FBO and maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) services for a variety of general aviation aircraft.
The Honeywell Aspire 200LG SATCOM system turns an aircraft into an Internet hot spot and enables pilots and passengers to use Wi-Fi-enabled devices smartphones, tablet computers, and laptop computers to access email, Internet browsing, texting, and voice communications.
The FAA STC data package consists of the Aspire 200 LG SwiftBroadband SATCOM system with optional CNX-200 Cabin Gateway with accelerator, augmented with a Honeywell Sky Connect dualchannel Iridium SATCOM.
By certifying the Aspire 200’s standard router and the CNX-200 accelerator for Wi-Fi operation, Gulfstream operators can choose either router or install them both, Banyan officials say.
In addition to high speed data solutions, Banyan avionics experts install in-flight entertainment upgrades, glass cockpits, LPV/WAAS upgrades, flight management systems, satellite TV, enhanced ground proximity warning systems, multifunction displays, satellite communications, Iridium, and traffic collision avoidance systems (TCAS) avionics.
Banyan’s avionics department is certified as an FAA and EASA repair station and has also earned repair station designations for Argentina, Brazil, Bermuda, and Venezuela.
