American Airlines and US Airways discuss possible merger to boost competition with United and Delta
FORT WORTH, Texas, 2 Sept. 2012. Leaders of American Airlines and US Airways are discussing a possible airline merger to strengthen competition with rival U.S. carriers United Airlines and Delta Airlines.
Executives of AMR Corp. of Fort Worth Texas, the parent company of American Airlines, and US Airways Group Inc. in Tempe, Ariz., the parent company of US Airways, reported Friday that they have started merger talks.
The airlines have entered into a non-disclosure agreement under which the companies have agreed to exchange confidential information to evaluate a potential combination, airline officials say. The agreement does not guarantee a merger.
A combined US Airways and American Airlines would have substantial presence in New York, Philadelphia, Washington, Charlotte, N.C., Miami, Chicago, Dallas, Phoenix, and Los Angeles.
