ATLANTIC CITY, N.J., 21 Oct. 2012. The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is forming a Center of Excellence for Environment and Energy next year, and would like comments from industry on the soon-to-be-established center at a public meeting Nov. 15 and 16 in the Washington, D.C. area.

The FAA's W.J. Hughes Tech Center in Atlantic City, N.J., has issued a presolicitation for the Center of Excellence for Environment and Energy (13-C-EE-Notice) urging private companies and universities to apply for membership in the center to work collectively on business and operational issues.

Members of the FAA Center of Excellence for Environment and Energy will conduct research in areas such as aircraft noise and impacts; aircraft emissions and impacts; aircraft technology assessment; compatible land use management; alternative jet fuels research; environmentally and energy efficient gate-to-gate aircraft operations; aviation environmental modeling and analysis; and aviation environmental policy.

FAA officials say they expect the new center of excellence to attract attention from airlines; airport authorities; and other governmental entities to solve unique and difficult aviation problems related to environment and energy.

These organizations may be considered as affiliate members by the COE core universities and may contribute to and receive funding from the center.

To register for the public meeting in November, or for more information about the meetings contact the FAA's Patricia Watts by e-mail at [email protected], or Jessica Shaw at [email protected].

Potential applicants are encouraged but not required to attend this meeting. More information is online at https://www.fbo.gov/spg/DOT/FAA/WJHTC/13-C-EE-Notice/listing.html.
