RUNGIS, France, 18 Dec. 2012. Officials at Embraer Defense and Security in Brazil needed an audio system for the Embraer KC-390 military transport aircraft to ensure broadcast announcements are heard throughout the aircraft’s cockpit and cabin. They found their solution at Cobham. Cobham won a contract to provide the Passenger Address System (PAS) for the KC-390.
The company’s Cobham Aerospace Communications strategic business unit in France will provide one PAS, including a Passenger Audio Amplifier and a set of loudspeakers, for each KC-390 aircraft.
With this latest selection, Cobham now provides five products to the KC-390 program: the Wing-mounted Aircraft Refuelling Pods (WARP), the auxiliary fuselage fuel tanks, the aerial refueling probes, the nose radomes, and the PAS.
The Embraer KC-390 is a medium-size, twin-engine, jet-powered military transport aircraft designed to perform aerial refueling, transport cargo and troops, and to receive fuel in-flight. It is reportedly the heaviest aircraft to be manufactured by Embraer and the entire Brazilian aerospace industry. The Brazilian Air Force will be able to transport up to 23 tons of cargo, including wheeled armored vehicles, with the KC-390.
According to Embraer, the first flight of the KC-390 is expected in 2014, with first aircraft delivery in 2016.
