TOULOUSE, France, 3 May 2013. Nepal Airlines Corp., the national flag carrier of Nepal, has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to buy two Airbus A320 aircraft equipped with sharklet fuel-saving wing tip devices.

Nepal officials chose the A320 for its economics and performance necessary for high-altitude airport operations, and its suitability for a wide variety of routes, Airbus officials say.

Sharklets deliver as much as four percent savings in fuel consumption making the aircraft a cornerstone of Nepal’s fleet modernization. “For a landlocked nation, aviation really is our window to the world and the world’s window to us," says Nepal Managing Director Madan Kharel.

The A320 is equipped for Required Navigation Performance (RNP) that enables the aircraft to fly precisely along predefined routes using onboard navigation. This is particularly useful for operations at high altitude airports such as Kathmandu that are constrained by mountains.

Nepal Airlines, which started operating in 1958, flies to four international destinations and 25 domestic locations in the heart of the Himalayas. The A320 family includes the A318, A319, A320 and A321.
