Amazon (Nasdaq: AMZN) founder Jeff Bezos' bid to become a leader in the U.S. space launch industry has become a bit brighter recently, as competitor Elon Musk searches for the reasons for the June 28 explosion of a SpaceX rocket after its launch from the Space Coast.

The two competing billionaires are taking very different routes to developing their outer space businesses, but the wins and losses of each reflect on the other.
