Gulfstream Aerospace Corp., a wholly owned subsidiary of General Dynamics (NYSE:GD) in Savannah, Ga., debuted its all-new Gulfstream G500 business jet (bizjet) aircraft at the 2015 National Business Aviation Association (NBAA) Convention & Exhibition in Las Vegas in November 2015.

According to Gulfstream officials, the Gulfstream G500 is optimized for stylish performance. “Every aspect of the all-new Gulfstream G500’s design and performance is dedicated to the fastest flight possible, while in the cabin, every detail is devoted to providing a uniquely personalized and completely comfortable interior. With the G500, Gulfstream strikes an optimal balance of speed, maneuverability and comfort that helps passengers maximize every minute of their travel time.”

THE G500 RANGE

The all-new Gulfstream G500 stretches the limits of high-speed travel. The advanced airframe design and powerful Pratt & Whitney Canada engines give the aircraft a range of 5,000 nautical miles/9,260 kilometers at Mach 0.85. The G500’s nonstop reach connects distant cities such as Istanbul to Cape Town, South Africa; Los Angeles to London; and San Francisco to Tokyo.

The aircraft outdistances all peers above Mach 0.85 and is the only jet in its class to combine incredible speed with significant range—3,800 nautical miles/7,038 kilometers—when flying at Mach 0.90. The G500 blazes across the sky at a maximum Mach of 0.925.

Payload isn’t sacrificed for speed and range. A fully fueled G500 covers 5,000 nautical miles/9,260 kilometers at Mach 0.85 with eight passengers and luggage. Double the payload and the G500 still flies up to 4,600 nautical miles/8,519 kilometers nonstop, enough to fly from São Paulo, Brazil, to Madrid.

THE G500 CABIN

With a width of 7 feet 11 inches/2.41 meters and a height of 6 feet 4 inches/1.93 meters, the all-new Gulfstream G500 cabin is the optimal size and shape to help produce best-in-class speed, maneuverability and fuel efficiency, yet it’s still large enough to carry 19 passengers.

The aircraft’s uniquely shaped cross-section translates to plentiful elbow and shoulder room for seated passengers while also offering plenty of headroom as passengers move about the cabin. The 27-inch-/68.5-centimeter-wide seats include an articulating footrest for comfortable reclining. Pedestal-mounted conference tables provide stability for working and are height adjustable. High-speed communications and entertainment equipment allow the cabin to double as an office in the sky or a media room.

With an interior cabin length of 41 feet 6 inches/12.65 meters, the G500 offers exceptional space for an owner to design and arrange multiple areas for work, relaxation or entertainment to his or her liking.

The cabin environment influences the travel experience while airborne and upon arrival. The all-new G500’s 12 large Gulfstream panoramic windows provide captivating views and bathe the cabin in natural light. Only 100 percent fresh air, replenished every two minutes, fills the cabin.

Gulfstream acousticians engineered the interior to be quiet enough for passengers to converse in normal tones even while in flight. The interior is pressurized to no more than 4,850 feet/1,478 meters, even at a maximum altitude of 51,000 feet/ 15,545 meters. The combination of clean, replenished air and a low interior altitude helps reduce the effects of jet lag so that passengers arrive feeling more refreshed and alert.

With the Gulfstream Cabin Management System, the cabin experience is further enhanced because passengers control lighting, window shades, temperature and entertainment with touch-screen devices from their seats.

THE G500 FLIGHT DECK - IMMERSIVE INTELLIGENT INTEGRATION

Gulfstream achieves another flight deck breakthrough with the Symmetry Flight Deck. As business aviation’s leading innovator, Gulfstream debuts two revolutionary technologies in the all-new Gulfstream G500. The immersive, intelligent integration of the new flight systems enhances efficiency and further improves safety.

Active control sidesticks replace the control columns, creating more space and better comfort for pilots. The sidesticks are digitally linked to provide the same response and control of a traditional pedestal-mounted yoke to ensure that both pilots see and feel every maneuver and control input the other pilot makes.

Ten integrated touch screens eliminate the majority of flight deck switches to reduce workload and improve how pilots interact with onboard systems. Using Gulfstream’s immersive Phase-of-Flight intelligence, the touch screens display a structured task list and selection options needed for a specific phase of flight.

A next-generation Enhanced Vision System heightens pilot awareness in low visibility. An improved infrared sensor boosts resolution by 400 percent, and camera advancements provide a wider field of view. The EVS is linked to a head-up display, allowing the pilot to view images on a transparent screen positioned in his or her field of vision. Gulfstream is the first business aviation company to offer this third-generation EVS, and it comes as standard equipment on the G500.

Flight deck styling is also re-envisioned in the G500. A blend of leather, brushed nickel and glass produces a flight deck as attractive and comfortable as it is intuitive. The crew seats pan fully from side to side for ease of movement and are made from perforated leather with a ventilated mesh for greater comfort.

Gulfstream also takes the inner workings of the G500 to new levels of sophistication, creating computer-controlled systems that further enhance efficiency and safety.

The redundant Intelligence-by-Wire takes fly-by-wire technology to the next level. Intelligence-by-Wire incorporates flight controls, autopilot, autothrottle and autobraking for smoother flight and peak engine performance.

The G500 is also the first business aircraft manufactured with a Data Concentration Network. The DCN advanced network infrastructure lines the airframe with technology that significantly reduces cables and parts.
