Robinson Helicopter set to introduce two-place Cadet for training and utility applications

TORRANCE, Calif., 7 Dec. 2015. Robinson Helicopter Co. in Torrance, Calif., is putting the final touches on the introduction of a new two-place helicopter in early 2016 -- the R44 Cadet for training and other utilitarian applications.
The Cadet retains the same basic airframe, rotor system, and Lycoming O-540-F1B5 engine as the R44 Raven I. Robinson designers, however, have removed the helicopter's rear seats and reconfigured the aft compartment for cargo.
Maximum gross weight is 2200 pounds, which is 200 pounds less than the Raven I. Engine power is derated to 210 horsepower at takeoff, and 185 horsepower continuous, which is down from 225/205 horsepower in the Raven I.
The lower weight and derated power provide increased performance margins at high altitudes, Robinson officials say. The Cadet's newly designed muffler also reduces the helicopter's flyover noise signature by about three decibels from the Raven I.
The new Cadet helicopter will have options for air conditioning, autopilot, and avionics packages optimized for VFR or IFR training. FAA certification is in progress with final flight tests expected before the end of the year.
The Cadet will be able to carry 489 pounds of passengers and baggage with full fuel. The helicopter will be able to fly as fast as 110 knots at ranges as far as 300 miles between refuelings, and at altitudes to 14,000 feet.
