Cobham ASICs integrated into airport security screening systems

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo., 25 May 2016. Cobham officials in Colorado Springs, Colorado, are fulfilling orders totaling approximately $1.6 million for custom application specific integrated circuits (ASIC) for airport security screening applications. Cobham Semiconductor Solutions, a business unit of the Cobham Advanced Electronics Solutions sector, is delivering the company’s ASICs, designed to provide high-level detection performance to the security screening industry.

Cobham officials in Colorado Springs, Colorado, are fulfilling orders totaling approximately $1.6 million for custom application specific integrated circuits (ASIC) for airport security screening applications. Cobham Semiconductor Solutions, a business unit of the Cobham Advanced Electronics Solutions sector, is delivering the company’s ASICs, designed to provide high-level detection performance to the security screening industry.

“Our design engineering experience and heritage reduces technical risk while our extensive ASIC experience, intellectual property, and design libraries allow for first-pass success, thereby improving our customers’ time-to-market,” says Jeff Hassannia, senior vice president of business development and technology for Cobham Advanced Electronic Solutions.

Cobham has been providing digital and mixed-signal ASICs for more than 30 years; its four Design Centers are staffed with mixed-signal design experts with years of IC design experience and have designed and released into production custom mixed-signal ASIC's for space, commercial, military, industrial, telecommunications, and medical applications.

Cobham Semiconductor Solutions is a global supplier of standard HiRel ICs including memory, µprocessor, interconnect, and power and ASICs for space, commercial, medical and industrial markets, along with electronic manufacturing services (circuit card assembly, radiation testing, component up-screening, and packaging). Cobham Semiconductor Solutions’ Colorado Springs site is a supplier of semicustom and standard VLSI circuits and custom circuit card assemblies with a Qualified Manufacturer List (QML) certification for Class Q, Class T and Class V.

o Liner Photodiode Array → COBHAM IC → Data Processing → Image Reconstruction

Size/Space

o Standard Product solutions didn't exist with enough channels to address the application

Power

o Even the standard product architectures, if integrated, would have much too high a power density for a CT gantry

Environment

o To meet lower noise demands, have to move read-out ASIC into the x-ray beam

o Solution needs total ionizing dose tolerance

Operation

o Aeroflex mixed-signal ASIC is at the front end of the imaging system

o Critical low noise, high linearity performance is required to reduce imaging artifacts

o Best in class power efficiency reduces thermal noise in signal path

Value Proposition

o Radiation Tolerant design allows the ASIC to be in the X-ray beam for noise reduction

o High channel count ASIC is needed for increasing imaging resolution

o Programmable output resolution: 12, 14, 16, or 18-bits
