Teledyne Controls and GE Aviation connect aircraft systems/engines to Predix data/analytics
SAN FRANCISCO. Officials at Teledyne Controls, a provider of wireless data acquisition and management technology in El Segundo, California, and GE Aviation in Evendale, Ohio, are partnering to transform engine health monitoring using GE’s Predix platform to apply data and analytics on continuous flight data wirelessly collected by Teledyne technology -- helping to advance predictive maintenance, increase operational efficiency, and optimize decision-making.
GE is connecting data, developers, and Predix, a cloud-based operating system built exclusively for industry that is powering innovative Industrial Internet apps that turn operational data into insight for better and faster decision-making, officials say.
“Until now, health monitoring has been limited because it has been performed using only a few hundred bytes of data sent from the aircraft via ACARS, which is fairly expensive and has limited bandwidth,” says Willie Cecil, director of business development, wireless and data automation solutions at Teledyne Controls. Predictive maintenance for aircraft is being taken to a completely different level for operators, he adds. “Using Teledyne’s GroundLink patented technology, which leverages higher bandwidth and less expensive cellular wireless networks, several megabytes per flight hour of continuous data can be made available for engine analytics.”
“Applying physics and data science expertise together, on continuous data, is the recipe to create analytics that enable increased detection lead time, reduce maintenance burden, and improve asset availability,” says John Nelson, data product manager for GE Aviation. The flow of richer, continuous data enables insights into asset condition not previously possible, he continues. “The partnership between Teledyne Controls and GE will benefit our customers by simplifying the flow of commercial aircraft flight data to GE’s Predix platform, and enrich the data at speeds and scale enabled by Industrial Internet technologies.”
Headquartered in Southern California, Teledyne Controls LLC is a wholly owned subsidiary of Teledyne Technologies Inc. (NYSE:TDY). Teledyne Controls is a manufacturer and innovator of a wide range of data management solutions designed to help aircraft operators collect, analyze, and distribute aircraft data more efficiently. Teledyne Controls maintains worldwide facilities and a global network of field representatives to support its many airline, airframe, and military customers.
GE, the Digital Industrial Company, is transforming industry with software-defined machines and solutions that are connected, responsive, and predictive (NYSE:GE). GE is organized around a global exchange of knowledge, the "GE Store," where each business shares and accesses the same technology, markets, structure, and intellect. Each invention further fuels innovation and application across our industrial sectors. With people, services, technology, and scale, GE delivers better outcomes for customers by speaking the language of industry.
