An Intelligent Aerospace reader and aerospace & defense (A&D) industry veteran upon reading “MIL-STD-1553B in avionics: where data networking has been and where it's going” – a thought-provoking article by Mark Hearn at MiltesTek – submitted a Letter to the Editor related to 1553 and STANAG 7221.

An Intelligent Aerospace reader and aerospace & defense (A&D) industry veteran upon reading “MIL-STD-1553B in avionics: where data networking has been and where it's going” – a thought-provoking article by Mark Hearn at MilesTek – submitted the following Letter to the Editor. It reads:

The U.S. Air Force did have its funding cut to support the war in Iraq but then ASD/R&E (Department of Defense) along with a multinational consortium including Canada, the U.K., Germany, and others supported the completion of the program along with the demonstration and test of the technology. It was tested in eight or nine fixed- and rotary-wing aircraft, leading to the U.S. and its NATO allies to begin the ratification of Edgewater’s E1553® technology as a NATO Standard in 2010. The NATO Avionics System Panel (AVSP), chaired by the U.S. Navy, sponsored the standardization and the activity began as draft STANAG 7221.

In May 2015, after a five-year effort, STANAG 7221 – the Broadband Real-Time Data Bus Standard, was ratified and promulgated by the NATO Standardization Organization (NSO) through a unanimous vote. The standard is currently on the restricted NATO server and, therefore, requires a government sponsor to acquire the standard on behalf of industry.

Since the ratification of STANAG 7221, a number of major programs in the U.S. and internationally are underway, whereby STANAG 7221 has been made a requirement. Regardless, STANAG 7221 has been proven, in multiple instances, to provide the most affordable solution and a very rapid approach for the integration of increased data capacity in support of data-centric modernizations on the vast majority of military aircraft, legacy as well as fifth-generation. It operates concurrently with, and without impact to, the existing Mil-Std 1553B signaling. As a military standard, it is now being included in various military procurement activities as a requirement.
