NAVAL AIR STATION FALLON, Nev. An F-22A Raptor military aircraft suffered extensive damage after skidding along the runway at Naval Air Station (NAS) Fallon in Nevada during what is being called a botched takeoff. U.S. Air Force officials are investigating the mishap, although initial reports speculate the cause may have been an issue with the left engine, related to the premature retraction of landing gear, or a combination of factors.
The F-22 Raptor is a fifth-generation, single-seat, twin-engine, all-weather stealth tactical fighter aircraft developed by Lockheed Martin for the United States Air Force.
This particular aircraft belongs to Elmendorf Air Force Base's 3rd Wing in Anchorage, Alaska. The pilot was performing an adversary role at Naval Air Station Fallon’s Naval Aviation Warfighting Development Center, which was previously known as the Naval Strike and Air Warfare Center (NSAWC), officials say.
