KONGSBERG, Norway -- Norwegian firm Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace is partnering with commercial air navigation services provider Serco to address the United Kingdom's emerging air traffic control services market.
The strategic collaboration, announced earlier this week, will see Serco leverage its experience working in the U.K., United States and Dubai to create implementation opportunities for Kongsberg's "Ninox" remote tower and remote virtual tower technologies.
"There are over 190 airports and airfields in the U.K., and much of the supporting air traffic control (ATC) infrastructure is outdated and due to be renewed in the next few years," said Serco managing director Paul McCarter. "Our agreement with Kongsberg presents a great opportunity to bring world-class innovative technology to the U.K. and combines two companies with world-leading expertise."
Kongsberg's systems -- slated to be installed at 15 Norwegian airports by the end of 2021 -- give operators the ability to provide air traffic services both on- and off-site, making them low maintenance and cost-effective for monitoring multiple sites.
The company said its remote tower systems consist of a spinning 360-degree camera with a range-eye resolution of 0.28mrad/28cm at 1 km, giving it the ability to provide a seamless field of view.
"Working with Serco, who will bring their understanding of the U.K. market and air traffic control, will provide an exciting opportunity for us," Kongsberg's Kjetil Myhra.
