VANTAA, Finland -- Finnish carrier Finnair has partnered with communications company Viasat Inc. to launch a new high-speed internet service on its narrow-body Airbus fleet.
Viasat has already installed in-flight internet systems on six Finnair aircraft, with plans to outfit 20 by the end of summer. The airline said it expects to have all of its narrow-body Airbus planes equipped by next summer.
In addition to offering connectivity to the company's "Nordic Sky" portal, Finnair said the gate-to-gate service will allow for internet browsing and digital media streaming.
"Finnair is a customer-focused airline bringing the latest technology to their fleet to ensure advanced passenger engagement," said Don Buchman, Vice President and General Manager of Commercial Aviation at Viasat. "We're proud to partner with them, and provide onboard internet experiences that deliver on unmatched speed and quality."
The service, available only on Finnair's European flights, is now in a two-month testing period, during which the airline will gather information on functionality and satisfaction.
"In entering the passenger testing phase, we'll be gaining the critical insights needed to further optimize our service to ensure Finnair customers get a unique experience built around their needs, interests and usage behaviors," Buchman said.
Intelligent Aerospace reported earlier this month that Viasat had begun providing similar connectivity aboard El Al Israel Airlines' Boeing fleet.
