WELLINGTON, New Zealand -- Germany technology group Rohde & Schwarz will supply a new IP-based voice communications systems for the Airways Corp. of New Zealand.
Airways, the state-owned navigation provider for all of New Zealand, is in the midst of an air traffic management infrastructure upgrade program.
The modernization calls for Rohde & Swartz to supply its quad-redundant VCS-4G communications systems in two tranches. The first will see equipment and infrastructure installed in air traffic control centers in Auckland and Christchurch, while the second will include tower-based equipment at an additional 22 towers.
The contract includes the delivery, implementation and support for more than 200 controller positions, alongside the installation of new ATM interfaces, ATC radios and other ground-to-ground communication lines.
Rohde & Schwarz said the design phase will be completed this year, with commissioning of the Auckland and Christchurch ATC centers to be complete by 2020. Work on the other towers is expected to begin in 2021.
"The quad-redundant, distributed architecture offered for the control centers in Auckland and Christchurch will be a key element in helping Airways significantly increase resilience and provide a unique geographic flexibility to manage their operations in a single trusted environment in the future," Rohde & Schwarz said in a statement.
