May 9, 2019-The report on the 2017 incident aboard an Aer Lignus trip from Cork to London notes that the emergency landing took place due to "fumes" being smelled in the cockpit roughly 20 minutes after takeoff. After investigation, it was found that cockpit odors were due to bearing wear in an avionics bay blower fan. The pilot instructed passengers to disembark the aircraft quickly and leave behind their belongings, which caused some passengers to believe an emergency exit instruction was given and 32 of the 143 passengers egressed onto the wings of the Airbus A320.
Steinbuch wrote, "The airline also plans to revise its procedures so there is clearer understanding of the difference between a rapid disembarkation and a full emergency evacuation.
