12 June 2025 - The new directive instructs the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to repeal the longstanding ban on overland supersonic flights, develop an interim noise-based certification standard, and eliminate additional rules that have hindered the industry's growth.
The order also requires the FAA to create a noise certification framework for supersonic aircraft that balances technological feasibility, economic viability, and community acceptance.
To support long-term innovation, the directive calls for coordinated supersonic research and development efforts across federal agencies through the National Science and Technology Council, led by the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy.
Additionally, the Executive Order promotes international collaboration by directing the FAA and other agencies to work with global partners on regulatory alignment and to pursue bilateral agreements enabling international supersonic operations.
