Summary points:

  • Widerøe Launches Dash 8 Upgrade: Norway-based Widerøe is the first airline to adopt Universal Avionics' InSight flight deck and Connected Avionics system as part of De Havilland Canada’s Dash 8 modernization program.
  • Cockpit Modernization Enhances Performance: The upgrade replaces legacy CRT displays with high-resolution digital panels, supports advanced navigation and communications, and enables automated post-flight data transfer and updates.
  • Fleet Life Extension and Efficiency Gains: The avionics overhaul is intended to extend the operational life of the Dash 8-100/200 fleet, reduce operating costs, and improve overall efficiency - serving as a model for other regional carriers.

TUCSON, Ariz. - Universal Avionics in Tucson, Ariz., announced that Norway-based regional airline Widerøe will become the launch customer for a modernized avionics suite in its Dash 8-100/200 aircraft. The upgrade includes UA’s InSight flight deck and Connected Avionics platform and is being implemented as part of De Havilland Canada’s Dash 8 avionics modernization program.

De Havilland Canada in Calgary, Alberta, selected Universal’s integrated flight display system and connected applications to extend the operational life of the legacy turboprop fleet and meet the evolving requirements of modern airspace. The initiative aims to enhance navigational capability, reduce maintenance burdens, and boost efficiency for established regional fleets.

"The avionics modernization program from De Havilland Canada for the Dash 8 brings Universal’s advanced display system to the airline market," said Dror Yahav, CEO of Universal Avionics. "We are proud to help DHC and Widerøe extend the life of their reliable Dash 8 aircraft and ensure continued reliable service for their passengers with a modernized, more capable fleet."

The upgrade brings several technical improvements, including support for Localizer Performance with Vertical Guidance (LPV) and Required Navigation Performance (RNP) approaches down to 0.1 nautical miles. Enhanced digital communication via CPDLC and ACARS can reduce departure clearance time and improve coordination with operations centers. The cockpit now features five high-resolution LCD panels with synthetic vision, digital maps, engine and weather displays, and traffic data.

By eliminating aging CRT displays and outdated line-replaceable units (LRUs), the modernization improves aircraft availability and lowers operating costs. Touchscreen interfaces also reduce cockpit clutter and virtualize numerous controls.

Universal’s Connected Avionics system further supports post-flight data availability through a secure cloud platform and enables automated database updates, saving technicians up to 45 minutes per aircraft during routine maintenance cycles.
