WICHITA, Kan. - Textron Aviation announced that all new Cessna Skyhawk aircraft will now come equipped with a dual electronic ignition system (dual EIS), replacing the traditional dual magneto setup. The upgrade is designed to improve operational efficiency, reduce maintenance needs, and lower overall costs for owners of the single-engine training aircraft.
The Skyhawk, produced by Textron Aviation Inc., a subsidiary of Textron Inc. in Wichita, Kan., made its first flight in June 1955. Now celebrating its 70th anniversary, the Cessna 172 Skyhawk has delivered 45,000 units worldwide.
The newly integrated Lycoming dual EIS uses solid-state electronic components and fewer internal moving parts than the magneto-based system it replaces. According to Textron Aviation, the system enhances fuel efficiency, extends maintenance intervals, and supports improved engine performance.
"The incorporation of the dual electronic ignition system demonstrates Textron Aviation’s continued commitment to our piston aircraft, including the legendary Cessna Skyhawk, by easing operations for customers," said Chris Crow, vice president of Piston & Utility Sales at Textron Aviation.
The latest Skyhawk models also include Garmin G1000 NXi avionics with wireless connectivity, a standard angle-of-attack display, power headset jacks at each seat, USB charging ports, upgraded interior seating, a McCauley aluminum fixed-pitch propeller, and a 180-horsepower Lycoming IO-360-L2A engine.
Textron Aviation states that the Skyhawk remains a top choice for flight schools and private pilots, upholding a legacy of reliability, simplicity, and versatility for over seven decades.
