Officials at the Swedish Defence Material Administration, FMV, in modernizing Sweden’s national air defense program, recognized the need to upgrade its PS-870 coastal/gapfiller radar systems. To do so, they turned to engineers at ITT Corp. in White Plains, N.Y.
ITT won a $44.9 million contract for the Reliability and Modification (REMO) 870 program, which calls for upgrading PS-870 radars with state-of-the-art processing, transmitter, antenna, and display technologies. The PS-870, known commercially as the Land-based Coastal Radar (LCR), is a coastal/gapfiller radar system that automatically detects and tracks surface and airborne targets in difficult clutter environments.
The update is to be accomplished using commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) equipment and result in improved reliability and autonomous operation. If all options are exercised, the total contract value could reach more than $58 million.
Engineers will perform the work at ITT Electronic Systems, Radar Systems in Van Nuys, Calif.
