Engineers at Lockheed Martin Company in Bethesda, Md., needed pre-production microwave amplifiers for their work on the multinational Medium Extended Air Defense System (MEADS) program.
They found the necessary hardware at AML Communications Inc. of Camarillo, Calif. AML Communications designs and manufactures military-grade, microwave low-noise and power amplifiers and subsystems for the defense industry.
MEADS, a mobile air and missile defense system, is intended to replace Patriot systems in the United States and Germany and the Nike Hercules systems in Italy.
When completed, MEADS will roll off tactical transports with the troops and almost immediately begin operations. Its open architecture delivers air and missile defense system-of-system integration capabilities and enables operational mission-tailoring. MEADS is designed to provide greater firepower with less manpower than current systems.
MEADS International (MI), a multinational joint venture headquartered in Orlando, Fla., includes participating companies MBDA Italia in Rome, Lenkflugkörpersysteme (LFK) in Munich, Germany; and Lockheed Martin in the United States.
