Engineers at the GTE Worldwide Telecommunications Services in Needham Heights, Mass., needed digital microwave radios for the Voice, Video, and Data (ViViD) system they are developing for U.S. Navy facilities worldwide. So they chose the FSK+ microwave radios from Advanced TechCom Inc. in Wilmington, Mass.

"ATI`s digital microwave radios provide the high performance radio links we need to make this program successful," says Ed Hudson, ViVid program manager at GTE Worldwide. "The ViViD program is an important component in the Navy`s IT-21 strategy to develop advanced field command and control systems for the next millennium based on commercial off-the-shelf networked technology. the goal is to deliver the flexibility and connectivity to access information whenever and wherever it`s needed."

The FSK+ radio, which covers frequencies between 1.5 GHz and 23 GHz, features one application-specific integrated circuit for digital processing. The radio enables users to transmit voice and data across wireless microwave links. Its capabilities include 1+1 errorless receiver switching to protect against atmospheric facing and equipment failures; digital interface unit and radio frequency unit that users can locate as far apart as 1,500 feet; 4-FSK modulation; PC-based menus; user-configurable scrambler/descrambler; and built-in diagnostics and testing. - J.K.
