Designers at Sanders, a Lockheed Martin company in Nashua, N.H., are developing 6-inch micro air vehicles for future use by individual solders. Sanders experts are leading a development team that is working under supervision of the U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency in Arlington, Va. Sanders teammates Lockheed Martin Skunk Works in Palmdale, Calif., and General Electric Co. in Schenectady, N.Y., are designing miniature surveillance aircraft systems for a series of tests in reconnaissance, local situational awareness, battle damage assessment, targeting, placing sensors, communications relays, or sensing chemical, nuclear, and biological substances. Sanders will develop the electronics payload, including autopilot, inertial navigation, sensors, and data link.
