SAN JOSE, Calif., 9 May 2008. Proxim Wireless Corp., maker of core-to-client solutions for broadband wireless networks, has supplied broadband wireless equipment to the Port de La Rochelle in France to ensure enhanced security of the port facilities.
The Port de La Rochelle, located on the west coast of France, is one of the largest commercial ports in Europe. The 470-acre site receives more than 3,000 visits per day and has 10,000 badge holders. To increase security for the port, the authorities reviewed a surveillance solution based on fiber-optic cable, but the cost and lengthy deployment time were prohibitive.
CTV, a Proxim Wireless certified partner, proposed to the Port de La Rochelle authorities a full wireless IP-based solution, which was not only less expensive but also easier and quicker to install than the fiber alternative. CTV conducted RF and site surveys and recommended deploying Proxim Wireless equipment. The wireless solution had to be very secure and provide: video surveillance, personnel and vehicle access, control of shipping traffic, and IP telephony.
CTV used a wireless fiber ring using the Point-to-Point Proxim Tsunami QuickBridge.11 products for the backhauling of the video surveillance cameras and access controls. The system connects all of the port entry points and provides redundancy in case of link failure.
In addition to wirelessly enabling transmission from the cameras, the system can remotely grant or prevent access to visiting vehicles. The Tsunami QuickBridge.11 provides WiMAX capabilities and secured links using the Proxim Wireless protocol WORP (Wireless Outdoor Router Protocol), which is designed to optimize the performance of outdoor wireless Point-to-Point and Point-to-Multipoint links.
The Proxim Tsunami QuickBridge.11 Series operates in the 2.4 GHz, 4.9 GHz, and 5.1-6.08 GHz frequency bands. The QuickBridge.11 features QoS support for converged video, voice and data, enhanced security with AES encryption, high-performance with Dynamic Data Rate Selection and WORP, as well as a high-power 5 GHz version for extended range.
