WALTHAM, Mass., 10 Oct. 2007. Foster-Miller Inc. in Waltham, Mass., is introducing a transformer-like modular design robotic platform for military and first responders called MAARS -- short for Modular Advanced Armed Robotic System.
The MAARS is to replace the Foster-Miller SWORDS robot, which is fitted with an M249 Squad Automatic Weapon for use by infantry forces to secure checkpoints and to conduct armed reconnaissance.
MAARS uses the more powerful M240B Medium Machine Gun and has improved command and control, situational awareness, maneuverability, and safety, compared to its SWORDS predecessor, company officials say.
The MAARS chassis provides a uni-body frame and digital control unit for command and control and situational awareness for the operator. The complete system weighs about 350 pounds.
MAARS will also come with a new manipulator arm with a nominal 100-pound lift capability that can quickly replace the turret mounted M240B weapon. The robot offers multiple mission payloads and a common chassis.
