Microchip introduces EX 423 miniature crystal oscillator for low-power timing applications

CHANDLER, Ariz. - Microchip Technology Inc. in Chandler, Ariz., has introduced the EX 423 Evacuated Miniature Crystal Oscillator (EMXO), a low-power timing device designed for applications requiring high frequency stability, accuracy, and long-term reliability in space- and power-constrained environments.

The new oscillator builds on the company's EX 421 portfolio and delivers high RF performance in a low-profile 13 mm x 13 mm package. The device is intended for applications including GPS and GNSS tracking systems, military radios, medical equipment, ocean-bottom node seismic systems, test and measurement instruments, and satellite communications.

The EX 423 is sealed in an ultra-high-vacuum enclosure to provide thermal insulation and improve frequency stability. The quartz crystal employs a four-point mounting structure designed to enhance resistance to shock and reduce sensitivity to acceleration forces.

Microchip officials say the design focuses on key performance metrics for precision timing applications, including phase noise, temperature stability, short-term stability, warm-up time, and long-term frequency accuracy.

Operating across a standard frequency range of 10 MHz to 20 MHz, the EX 423 consumes 1 watt during warm-up and as little as 0.2 watts at 25 degrees Celsius during steady-state operation. The low power consumption is intended to help extend battery life in portable and remote systems while maintaining a stable timing reference.

Microchip offers a range of timing products, including miniature oscillators, timing server cards, and large-scale time synchronization systems for commercial, industrial, aerospace, and defense applications.
