Herrick chooses SOSA-aligned high-performance embedded computing from Wolf for adaptive waveform processing

Wolf will supply Sensor Open Systems Architecture (SOSA)-aligned VPX3U-RTX5000-SWITCH module for Herrick adaptive waveform processing applications.

GERMANTOWN, Md. – Military communications experts at Herrick Technology Laboratories Inc. in Germantown, Md., needed high-performance embedded computing for adaptive waveform processing applications. They found their solution from Wolf Advanced Technology in Stouffville, Ontario.

Wolf will supply the company's Sensor Open Systems Architecture (SOSA)-aligned VPX3U-RTX5000-SWITCH module for Herrick adaptive waveform processing applications.

The module will include the NVIDIA Quadro RTX 5000 GPU and switch backplane capabilities for PCI Express Gen 4 and 10 Gigabit Ethernet in a solution that is designed to save slot space in 3U VPX systems.

The NVIDIA Quadro RTX 5000 GPU provides as much as 11 terraFLOPs of processing power and 384 AI Tensor cores for high-performance embedded computing (HPEC) applications that include radar, artificial intelligence, and signals intelligence.

"Originally, we were considering creating our own SOSA-aligned PCIe Gen 4 switch combined with GPU module using NVIDIA MXM modules, but we decided to partner with WOLF because of their expertise with NVIDIA chip-down technology, which provides significantly better performance," says Robert Normoyle, Staff Scientist for Herrick.

"We were also impressed with WOLF’s ruggedization experience to make commercial GPUs effectively operate in extreme temperatures, shock, and vibration,” Normoyle says. The Wolf module "adds significant new performance and flexibility to our high-performance multi-function RF VPX systems.”

Herrick designs SOSA- and CMOS-aligned high-performance multi-function RF modules and VPX systems to support signals intelligence, electronic warfare, and communications applications for commercial and military systems designers.

Herrick is also designs open-architecture software-defined radio (SDR) systems with multi-channel RF and microwave receive and transmit functionality for demanding mission environments.
