ANDOVER, Mass. – Mercury Systems Inc. in Andover, Mass., is introducing the RFS1140 system-in-package (SiP) for edge processing applications like radar, electronic warfare (EW), and 5G communications.

The embedded computing processor combines state-of-the-art field-programmable gate array (FPGA) processing with the Jariet Technologies high-speed data converters at chip scale and manufactured in a trusted U.S. microelectronics facility.

Most silicon for embedded computing defense applications is designed by domestic chip makers but fabricated in overseas foundries, which represents a vulnerability in the microelectronics supply chain, Mercury officials say.

The RFS1140 for edge processing is manufactured in Mercury's trusted defense microelectronics activity (DMEA)-accredited microelectronics facility in Phoenix, which helps make commercial technology more accessible to the U.S. Department of Defense.

"By combining high-speed data converters, digital processing, memory and power in a single package, Mercury lowers overall system costs and complexity, and enables placement closer to the sensor edge," says Tom Smelker, Mercury's vice president.

The RFS1140 offers a trusted, secure, low-latency solution that reduces back-end processing; offers silicon technology for an increase of performance per unit area; features state-of-the-art FPGA processing; has integrated power and memory; offers high-speed direct digitization as fast as 64 gigasamples per second at the sensor edge; and has onshore trusted manufacturing in a DMEA-accredited facility.
