Engineers at DY 4 Systems of Kanata, Ontario, are providing rugged commercial off-the-shelf PowerPC-based VME single-board computers to General Dynamics Land Systems of Warren, Mich., for use in the electronics suite of the U.S. Army M1A2 Abrams main battle tank systems enhancement program. DY 4 officials are providing their General Purpose Processor for the Abrams vetronics. The single-board computer can accommodate mezzanine boards to process graphics, speech, 1553B data bus, or utility bus. The board is the tank`s mission processor for hull and turret control, and for the tank`s commander electronic unit. U.S. Army officials are urging managers of other combat vehicle programs to adopt the DY 4 General Purpose Processor for their vetronics architectures.
