Rugged 3U CompactPCI embedded computing board for avionics and unmanned vehicles introduced by Aitech

Aitech Defense Systems Inc. in Chatsworth, Calif., is introducing the C802 3U CompactPCI single-board computer based on the Intel Core i7 microprocessor for data- and graphics-intensive military embedded systems such as avionics, unmanned vehicles, and intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) applications.

Aitech Defense Systems Inc. in Chatsworth, Calif., is introducing the C802 3U CompactPCIsingle-board computer based on the Intel Core i7 microprocessor for data- and graphics-intensive military embedded systems such as avionics, unmanned vehicles, and intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) applications.

Speeds for the C802 embedded computing board for use in harsh conditions can be factory configured to 2.53 GHz, a lower-power 2 GHz, or a low-power 1.33 GHz. The C802 CPU board operates in temperatures from -55 to 85 degrees Celsius, and combines Intel's dual-core processing and hyper-threading technology with an integrated on-chip data and instruction cache, per core, of 32 kilobits for L1 and 256 kilobits for L2, as well as a 4-megabyte L3 shared cache.

The embedded computing board features high speed DDR3 and Flash memory arrays, and as much as 4 gigabytes of fast DDR3 SDRAM operating at 1066 MHz and 4 megabytes of flash BIOS.

The on-board 64-gigabyte SATA Flash solid state disk (SSD), controlled directly from an ICH8M I/O controller hub, hosts the operating system and user application code. Additional virtual SATA solid-state drives can be added via the on-board PMC/SATA site or via the external USB ports.

I/O include automatic system and peripheral detection, two Gigabit Ethernet ports, one SATA II port, two serial UART communication ports, two USB 2.0 interfaces, HDMI/DVI and CRT video interfaces, a high-definition stereo audio input or output, and as much as eight single-ended general purpose discrete I/O channels that are independently configurable as input or output.

An integrated 2D/3D graphics-processing-unit (GPU) engine supports graphics and video processing and provides the HDMI/DVI and CRT video output channels. Also provided is an industry-standard PMC/XMC slot that supports 32-bit/33 MHz PCI bus, while the VITA 42-compliant XMC implements a PCI Express interface to support x8, x4, x2 and x1 lane widths.

The C802 embedded computing board is available in five software-compatible versions, including a commercial air-cooled version for lab development, two extended-temperature air-cooled formats (per PICMG 2.0 Rev. 3.0) and two extended temperature, rugged conduction formats (per ANSI/VITA 30.1-2002).

The conduction-cooled versions use a thermal management frame and custom heat sink. Two temperature sensors monitor the board and provide data to the user application software. Software operating system support includes Windows Embedded and XP Professional, Linux, and Wind River VxWorks.
