Panasonic Connect launches TOUGHBOOK 56 rugged laptop with AI-enabled edge computing and enhanced security
NEWARK, N.J. - Panasonic Connect North America, a division of Panasonic Corporation of North America in Newark, N.J., has introduced the Panasonic TOUGHBOOK 56, a modular rugged laptop designed for mobile workers in public safety, utilities, enterprise, and federal applications.
The system emphasizes high-performance edge computing, advanced connectivity, and layered cybersecurity for deployment in demanding operational environments.
Built on earlier platforms such as the Panasonic TOUGHBOOK 54 and Panasonic TOUGHBOOK 55, the TOUGHBOOK 56 introduces expanded modularity and upgraded processing, graphics, and networking capabilities.
The system is powered by Intel Core Ultra Series 2 processors with Intel vPro, supporting up to 16 CPU cores. Graphics options include Intel Arc and an optional AMD Radeon PRO W7500M with 8 gigabytes of memory. Panasonic says the system is the first rugged PC to offer an 8GB discrete GPU option, and that Intel Arc graphics can improve performance by up to 2.2 times compared to prior generations.
These capabilities are intended to support artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled and compute-intensive workloads at the edge, including data processing and analysis in environments where cloud connectivity may be limited or unavailable.
The platform includes up to three Ethernet ports, with options for 2.5 gigabits per second and 10 gigabits per second, supporting high-speed data transfer for applications such as imaging and large dataset movement.
The TOUGHBOOK 56 features a modular design with six configurable areas, including expansion packs, battery, memory, and storage, enabling upgrades and lifecycle extension without full system replacement.
Security features include optional FIPS-encrypted drives, compatibility with Panasonic’s TOUGHBOOK Total Defense security stack, and embedded TOUGHBOOKGuard firmware designed to detect hardware tampering. Administrative controls provide visibility into system updates and user configurations.
Additional features include a 14-inch WUXGA 16:10 display with optional 1,000-nit touchscreen and Gorilla Glass, up to 64 gigabytes of DDR5 memory, up to 4 terabytes of storage with RAID-1 options, a 5-megapixel webcam with AI noise reduction, and speakers rated at 98 decibels. The system offers up to 24 hours of battery life based on MobileMark 30 testing, with an optional second battery.
The company says that its device meets MIL-STD-810H durability standards, includes IP53 protection, and is rated for 3-foot drops. It is compatible with existing docks used by earlier TOUGHBOOK systems, with new docking options offering expanded I/O and improved durability.
