SAN DIEGO, 10 Sept. 2008.AP Labs Inc. in San Diego, which specializes in hazardous-environment and rugged computer and communications subsystems, is taking aim at commercial aviation avionics and in-flight entertainment and communications applications with the launch of its AP Avionx business unit.

The new business unit, which will be co-located with AP Labs in San Diego, is a complement to AP Labs traditional rugged chassis and systems integration business, company officials say. The mission of AP Avionix is to create advanced computing, storage, and communication solutions for commercial in-flight applications.

In-flight entertainment and communications is poised for substantial growth, AP Avionix officials say. The market for in-flight broadband services is expected to grow to nearly $936 million in passenger revenue in 2012, up from initial revenue of $6.6 million this year, according to research from MultiMedia Intelligence in Scottsdale, Ariz.

This industry growth will drive technology companies to build and supply platform components that provide computing, storage or communication capabilities to enable such services, company officials say.

With more than 20 years of experience building ultra-rugged computing platforms designed for commercial and defense applications, AP Avionx will use AP Labs' thorough understanding of engineering high-performance, mission critical computers deployed in harsh environments.

AP Avionix offers system components to provide commercial airline passengers with in-flight broadband services like Internet, VPN access, e-mail, multimedia capabilities, video-on-demand, games, and additional entertainment choices in a integrated wireless cabin over a broadband air-to-ground or air-to-satellite link.

The company offers cockpit and cabin such as servers, media servers, wireless RF-based systems, wireless access points, power solutions, and airborne wireless broadband systems. For more information contact AP Avionix online at www.apavionx.com, or AP Labs at www.aplabs.com.
