TUCSON, Ariz., Feb. 7, 2012. The U.S. Navy awarded Raytheon Company (NYSE: RTN) a $39.6 million contract for Fiscal Year 2012 production and delivery of the AIM-9X Block II infrared-guided air-to-air missile. The contract, which modifies a previously awarded contract, was announced on Jan. 31 by the Department of Defense.
The AIM-9X Sidewinder is an infrared-guided air-to-air missile that also has capability in surface-to-air and air-to-surface missions. The AIM-9X Block II adds a redesigned fuze and electronics along with other enhancements to the AIM-9X Block I.
The weapon is currently integrated on the F/A-18 Hornet, F-15 Eagle and F-16 Fighting Falcon. Over 4,500 AIM-9X Block I and II Sidewinder missiles have been produced.
