JOPLIN, Mo., 22 Nov. 2009.Satellite electronics designers at Ball Aerospace & Technologies Corp. in Boulder, Colo., needed nickel hydrogenbattery power for power management on the WorldView-2 remote sensing satellite. They found their solution from EaglePicher Technologies LLC in Joplin, Mo.
WorldView-2 is part of a constellation of satellites that offer high-resolution commercial satellite imagery of Earth. Ball Aerospace engineers chose the 22 100Ah satellite battery cells from EaglePicher to power the satellite during eclipse for an expected operational life of more than seven years, EaglePicher officials say.
WorldView-2's high spatial resolution, multispectral satellite imagery is for civil government mapping, land-use planning, disaster relief, exploration, defense/intelligence and visualization and simulation environments.
EaglePicher's nickel hydrogen batteries and cells power more than 440 space missions, including the Hubble Space Telescope where the batteries have lasted four times longer than the projected lifespan. EaglePicher batteries also are on the International Space Station, Lunar Rover, Apollo, Gemini and Mercury.
