SAN DIEGO, 9 Dec. 2010. Prime defense contractor Cobham plc in Wimborne Minster, England, is acquiring military electro-optics specialist RVision Inc. in San Diego to boost Cobham's expertise in scalable, modular, and deployable integrated surveillance systems, Cobham officials announced.

Cobham agreed to acquire the capital share of RVision for $28 million. The deal is expected to close by the end of December. The acquisition also involves cash considerations of as much as $20 million payable between 2012 and 2014, contingent on future performance, Cobham officials say.

RVision designs and builds electro-optical and infrared imaging systems, including ruggedized pan/tilt/zoom cameras, hardened processors, and tactical video hardware to help protect military installations, borders, nuclear and chemical plants, ports and harbors, and transit systems, as well as for military and law-enforcement surveillance applications.

RVision, which has 40 employees, will become part of the Cobham Avionics and Surveillance Division's Surveillance segment, based in Segensworth, England.

Cobham Surveillance designs and builds audio, video, tracking, locating, and sensors in airborne, marine, land, and special-purpose applications. The RVision acquisition "will enable us to further develop our scalable, modular and easily deployable integrated solutions, enhancing our position as a key technology solution provider in Surveillance markets,” says Andy Stevens, Cobham's chief executive officer.
