Mission-Critical Cooling Flow Monitoring for Military Systems

Nov. 23, 2021

Hoffer turbine flowmeters excel in thermal management flow applications such as radar cooling, chiller applications, cooling systems, and cooling towers.

Recently Hoffer Flow Controls’ flow systems have been specified to meter applications for land-based radar cooling. These meters are a part of a new contract to supply flow meters as part of the U.S. Army’s next-generation, 360-degree capable radar called the LTAMDS or Lower Tier Air and Missile Defense Sensors.

U.S. Army’s Patriot radar/missile

The radar used on this land-based missile will upgrade and eventually replace the current U.S. Army’s Patriot radar/missile. It will operate as part of the Army’s Integrated Air and Missile Defense network.

Hoffer turbine 4” flowmeters were on this project and measure water/glycol for radar cooling on this land-based, mobile unit designed for the U.S. Army. The LTAMDS is a radar that defeats advance and next-generation threats, including hypersonic weapons or those that fly faster than a mile a second.

The Hoffer 4” flow meters come with CAT-3 intelligent transmitters/signal conditioners mounted integral to the flow meters. These systems provide flow measurement of the water/glycol to keep the radar systems properly cooled. Keeping the radar systems cooled is massively important to their reliability. The fully functioning radar is critical to the defense system.

Superior flowmeter systems for use in critical flow measurement applications

Hoffer has provided superior flowmeter systems for use in critical flow measurement applications for government/defense for 52+ years. Numerous defense prime contractors and the various military branches have specified Hoffer systems for use in a wide variety of high-profile/critical flow applications.

In addition, Hoffer flow meters are also used to measure fuel flow on U.S. Navy ships and helicopters, for (reverse osmosis) RO water treatment on ships, and shipboard radar cooling applications. Moreover, the flow systems used for shipboard, land-based, or air-based flow applications have been tested to meet various MIL standards, including shock, vibration, and EMI.

Hoffer Flow Controls is pleased to provide high-quality, highly accurate turbine flow meter systems to the U.S. Army, U.S. Navy, and other areas of the U.S. defense and aerospace industries.
