U.S. government experts are approving the Quantum Multi-Mode Receiver from the AlliedSignal Electronic & Avionics ystems division in Olathe, Kan., for commercial aircraft landing approach guidance and en-route navigation.
Federal Aviation Administration officials OK`d the Quantum receiver for aircraft operating to and from airports with traditional instrument landing system equipment, as well as with satellite-based non-precision approach guidance equipment.
The receiver also is designed to accept upgrades to give it microwave landing system capability.
The Quantum device has a built-in global positioning system (GPS) receiver, which AlliedSignal officials say not only gives it satellite-based non-precision approach capability, but also future upgrade potential to handle precision satellite-approach guidance as ground-based differential GPS beacons are installed in and around the nation`s major airports.
Differential GPS-assisted instrument landing is part of the future Local Area Augmentation System - also known as LAAS - which is to be operational in 2003. - J.K.
