Experts at Northrop Grumman in Rolling Meadows, Ill., needed a light-weight display for the U. S. Army`s Firefinder Electronics Upgrade Program. Firefinder, a radar designed to locate artillery based on tracking their shell trajectories, needs high-resolution displays that can stand up to intense environmental conditions. So Northrop Grumman engineers chose the MPRD9643 from BARCO Inc. in Tucker, Ga.
"We liked the resolution, and the screen`s large size made the display easy to see," says Walter Steck, program manager for the Firefinder upgrade at Northrop Grumman. The Barco display also withstood the Army`s Munson road test which moves the device in a vehicle continuously over a road with the surface of a large washboard, he says.
The MPRD 9643 will display all screens, situations, and radar data associated with Firefinder`s Antenna Transceiver Group. BARCO`s 17-inch color rugged display is modular and is designed for one level on-line maintenance. The mean time to repair is less than 30 minutes.
Northrop Grumman engineers will integrate the display into the Firefinder`s Operations Central section which will be installed in a Lightweight Multi-purpose Shelter. The Operations Central will be mounted on a M1097 "Heavy" HMMWV which will tow the Antenna-Transceiver Group.
The enhanced man-machine interface and electronics for the Lightweight Multi-purpose Shelter upgrade will provide 50 percent more interior space. - J.M.
