Officials at Electronic Designs Inc. in Westborough, Mass., are offering a military-grade monolithic surface-mount 32-megabit NAND flash memory chip called the ED1784MSV for harsh-environment solid-state storage applications, including cockpit data recorders, cockpit voice recorders, satellite data recorders, and digital maps. The ceramic thin-pack device, which operates at temperatures between -55 degrees Celsius and 125 C, are intended for high-density applications with severe height restrictions. Versions also are available that comply to Appendix A of MIL-PRF 38535. The device is organized as 4M by 8 bits, and contains one spare array with error-detection-and-correction algorithms that can help provide as many as 12 million cycles of program and erase functions. - J.K.
